  • What is Luster Board?

LusterBoard is one of our premium substrates that is comparable to Dibond in that it consists of two very thin sheets of aluminum bonded to either side of a lightweight core. In the case of luster board, the core is constructed of layers of pressed hardwood and furniture-grade plywood. The aluminum surfaces are factory-baked with a polyester coating for photo quality color clarity, and superior impact, rust and warp resistance. LusterBoard’s composite interior makes it half the weight of standard plywood substrates (like MDO) and a fraction the weight of similarly sized sheet aluminum.

    LusterBoard for durable signage
LusterBoard has a smooth, durable aluminum veneer that provides an ideal surface for direct digital printing. We only use waterproof UV-cured inks so you will get photo-quality results and a message will last for years without fading. With two printable surfaces, and the ability to be cut to any shape, lusterboard is a great substrate for outdoor post signs and decorative panels, like billboards, real estate signs, and dimensional wayfinding signs. For durable temporary outdoor signage, Omega Board has a similar composition but is a bit more economical.

    Hang your LusterBoard sign anywhere
LusterBoard signs functions like wood so you can drill, cut and mount it any way you like using standard carpentry tools. Supported with the strength of aluminum, it provides optimal protection against wind and bowing. Although the rust proof metal surface ensures a waterproof message, the unfinished edges allow water access to the plywood inner core. If you are intending your sign for outdoor use, please remember to finish your edges with edge caps or other sealant.

  • How is LusterBoard different than MDO?

MDO is an outdoor plywood material that is faced with layers of paper and resin. Like MDO, LusterBoard is a wood-based outdoor sign material, but it is made of compressed hardwood and plywood and polyester-baked aluminum sheeting. This makes it lighter and thinner than MDO while giving it superior impact resistance.

  • What can I use LusterBoard for?

Lusterboard is the most heavy-duty outdoor sign substrate that we carry. This is the stuff that ballpark scoreboards are made of. High impact, water, wind and warp resistant, LusterBoard signs are created to stand the test of time. But you don’t have to own a sports team to use LusterBoard; this substrate makes resilient permanent real estate signage, A-frame signs and billboards.

  • Why order LusterBoard over DiBond?

Both LusterBoard and DiBond are composite materials bonded to twin wall aluminum faces. DiBond’s core is made of a dense polystyrene; LusterBoard’s is made of wood. Because of the nature of their cores, DiBond is offered in widths much thinner than LusterBoard. Thinner options are much more flexible and are not suitable as outdoor signs without the proper support. LusterBoard is thicker and thus more rigid; it has a more substantial feel to it.

  • Does LusterBoard come in different colors?

The aluminum faces of Lusterboard are coated in a high gloss factory-baked polyester. We print in full color (CMYK) on white LusterBoard. Other factory colors are available, but unless you’re looking for a metallic or matte finish, most customers opt to print color onto the white. If you’d like to know what factory colors LusterBoard currently offers, give us call, and we’ll get that information to you.

  • Does my LusterBoard sign come with posts or frames?

When you purchase a sign with us, you are purchasing the sign only, not the installation device or service. We offer stand and installation services for an additional fee.

  • What if I need holes drilled into my sign?

We would be happy to cut your sign to any size or shape. That includes any holes you may need. When you submit a custom design to be printed, we’ll generate a proof for you to approve before we begin work. If you need any specials shapes added or holes cut, just let us know and we’ll include that in our proof.
